Sugar mills in the country have reduced sugar production by 5% from January 1, this year as compared to the previous year. By the end of the year, 8 lakh tonnes of sugar had been produced while this year so far, 1.5 lakh tonnes of sugar has been produced. According to statistics from Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA).
Currently there are 5 mills in the country operating in the mills, while during the last year sowing season 1 sugar mills were operating. India's sugar season continues from October to September of each year.
Apart from the adverse conditions in Maharashtra, the state assembly elections have affected sugar production. Due to the heavy rainfall and flood situation in the Sangli-Kolhapur area in the state, the crushing operation started late. Sugar production in the state has so far been 5.4 lakh tonnes so far this year, up to 8 lakh tonnes. Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh is moderately high compared to Maharashtra.
Only five sugar mills are operating this year in Maharashtra, which was done by 5 mills last year, ISMA data says.
About 5% of the total sugar produced in the country is consumed by bulk producers like sweets, ice cream and it is increasing while the consumption of sugar by retail users is decreasing.
