Hallmarking will not be mandatory for gold jewelery weighing less than two grams
Mumbai, Ta. January 16, 2020, Thursday
Previous Hallmarking has become mandatory for gold jewelery in the country since January 1. This new law will benefit consumers from getting jewelry with a certificate of purity. Although hallmarking has become mandatory for gold jewelry, jewelers in the country have been given one year to clear their old stock and register with BIS. Thus, the next ta. Hallmark jewelry will no longer be sold after January 1, government sources said.
Gold jewelery and artifacts weighing less than two grams are exempted from government's mandatory hallmarking. The notification issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution suggests implementation of compulsory hallmarking across the country from 7 January.
Silver jewelry and artifacts are currently excluded from this standard. All jewelers selling gold jewelery will have to get Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) registration. Currently, 3 jewelers are registered in BIS.
About 3 of these jewelers have registered in the last three months. These registrations were made after reports that hallmarking was being made compulsory, sources in the Indian Association of Hallmarking Centers said.
The number of jewelers in the country is huge. Jewelers who sell non-Hallmarking jewelery will have to vacate their stock within a year. After the application of the standard, jewelers can only sell 1, 2 and 3 carat jewelry. Gold cannot be sold with other Purity Standards.
Existing Hallmarking Centers have sufficient capacity to hallmark gold jewelery made in India. These centers operate at 5 to 8 percent of their capacity.
There are some exemptions in the notification. In addition, jewelery weighing less than two grams and gold articles for medical, dental, veterinary, scientific and industrial use are exempted from hallmarking. In addition, gold, such as coins, bars, rods, wires, bars, does not apply to this standard. Hallmarking standard for 1, 2 and 3 carats will be applicable only for sale jewelery and not for any jewelery produced.
