Wheat bumper crop to remain in current Ravi season

New delhi date. January 20, 2020, Monday

In the current Ravi season, the probability of wheat being a record crop has increased. By the end of last week, wheat production may have been around 1 lakh tonnes more than last year, considering the area under wheat cultivation and the weather favorable.

In comparison to last year's rabi season, the wheat acreage in the current season is 8.5 lakh hectare and the area under it is 8 lakh hectare.

Considering the wheat yield data of different states of the country, wheat production at present stage will be more than 3 lakh tonnes, sources in the Agriculture Ministry said. In such a case, government agencies have a duty to curb wheat prices and put pressure on prices. Under such circumstances, farmers can suffer.

According to the 4th Advance Estimates of 3-4 wheat production last year, the production stood at 8.5 million tonnes. However, it is currently difficult to say exactly how much will increase production in the current season, sources at the Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research said.

It is certain, however, that the wheat crop will decline more than last year. It remains to be seen what the weather conditions are like in March. Wheat cultivation has increased in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Due to the high moisture content in the soil, acreage is also seen in some states. Due to high wheat production, it will also be challenging for government agencies to consolidate because the agencies currently have huge stocks.

Wheat withdrawals from the Food Corporation of India have been slow as wheat prices from the market are getting cheaper, sources said.
