DISCOMs have paid Rs. 80930 crore remaining to be paid

Mumbai, Ta. 13 January 2020, Monday

By the end of November 1, state power distribution companies (DISCOMs) were owed Rs 5 crore to power generating companies. This figure is 5 percent higher than November 1. 5% of the outstanding balance, ie Rs. 10 crore or more, is due more than days.

About 5% of the amount paid by DISCOMs has to be paid to private electricity producers while the rest is to be paid to government undertakings like NTPC, DVC and NHPC. The amount required to pay electricity companies through DISCOMs has been increasing for the last two years.

The balance of payments to power companies has been increasing since the Center introduced the Letter of Credit system from August 1. Under this mechanism, further discipline has been imposed on discos to issue payment obligations.

Overcoms of discos to power companies increased 5% annually in November. Under the Letter of Credit system, DISCOMs are required to issue a letter of credit to the power companies as payment guarantee.

Discoms in Rajasthan account for 5 per cent of the over-dues used to pay electricity generating companies across the country. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 5% and Tamil Nadu 5%.

By the end of November, the government company NTPCA had to collect a total of Rs 1 crore from the end of November, sources in the power ministry said. At the end of the financial year 6-8, the financial loss of DISCOMs was Rs 5 crore, which is 5% more on an annual basis. Power generation companies are facing financial stress due to delays in payment of funds through DISCOMs. Bank loan payments have increased the likelihood of defaults as companies' cash flows decline.
