Spectrum allocation without auction will cost Rs. There will be a loss of 3 lakh crores

AHMEDABAD: Allocating spectrum in the 6 GHz band without auction will cause a potential loss of over Rs 3 lakh crore to the national exchequer, said the telecom industry body COAI. Because telecom operators need to provide users with 100 Mbps download speed and 50 Mbps upload speed.

"If we go by the value obtained in the last auction for mid-band spectrum, it is around Rs. 317 crores per MHz. We want the price to be significantly lower. It will be difficult to calculate the potential loss to the government exchequer if the spectrum in 6 GHz is given without auction, said the organization's Director General SP Kochhar at an event discussing 6G spectrum for telecom services.

The 6 GHz band spectrum has a range of radiowave frequencies of about 1200 MHz. Other industry bodies have opposed COAI's demand and written to the government to license 6 GHz, which can be used for free Wi-Fi services.

Kochhar said that WiFi is losing relevance with the delivery of high speeds by 5G and WiFi players have not been able to properly utilize the free spectrum available to them in the 5 GHz band.

Subscribers want instant download and upload of any file quickly. If we look at Indian content, to meet this requirement we need about 2000 MHz spectrum in mid-band to provide 5G speed with 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload speed. In a country like the US, this requirement may be less because of their population density, said Kochhar.
