Quality control order for footwear will be enforced from July 1

New Delhi: Low quality footwear will no longer be sold in India. From July 1, 2023, production and sale of poor quality footwear will be banned in India. The government has ordered footwear units to implement quality control mandates in compliance with World Trade Organization norms. After this government order, both the production and sale of poor quality footwear will be stopped in the country.
The government has issued instructions to the footwear companies for this. The government has introduced norms for footwear companies. Following which now they have to make slippers. 27 footwear products are included in the purview of the Quality Control Order. The remaining 27 products will also be brought under this scope next year.
The new rule requires compliance of testing laboratory, BIS license and ISI mark norms for footwear manufacturing. The government has made quality control mandate mandatory for all footwear companies from July 1. After the new instructions of the government, poor quality shoes and slippers will not be manufactured in the country.
Regarding the new rule, the Bureau of Indian Standards said that currently the quality standards rules have been applied to large and medium scale manufacturers and importers. Later, from January 1, 2024, even small-scale footwear manufacturers will have to comply. The Quality Control Order will not only improve the quality of footwear products but will also help prevent importation of substandard products.
It may be noted that the government issued three mandatory quality control orders on October 27, 2020 in the leather and footwear sector. One of its orders was implemented in January last year. Now these companies will have to accept the remaining two new orders from July 1. With the help of the new rule, the government wants to ban poor quality footwear products from China. If China wants to sell its goods in India, it has to comply with the standard.
