The wheat production of the country in the current year is estimated to be lower than the government's claim

New Delhi: In the current year's ravi season, wheat cultivation in the country has been at least ten percent lower than the government's estimate. Wheat prices have seen a significant jump in the last two months due to low production. Wheat production is seen lower than the government's claim.
Low wheat production for the second consecutive year will make it difficult for the government to control food inflation.
The availability of wheat in the market is very low and the current year's wheat production figure is estimated at 10.10 to 10.30 crore tonnes by the Roller Flour Millers' Federation. India's annual consumption of wheat is around 10.80 crore tonnes.
Generally, farmers start harvesting wheat from March and complete the sale by June. Farmers sell their wheat to government agencies and private traders.
Supply of the commodity from farmers has dwindled, raising questions over the government's wheat production estimates, federation sources said. According to the government's estimate, the country's wheat production in 2023 is 11.27 crore tonnes.
In the last two months, the price of wheat has increased by ten percent and has reached around Rs 25,000 per tonne in the main mandis. Keeping in view the shortage of wheat in the country, the government has implemented its stock limit.
Heatwaves in February and March and unseasonal rains in April have affected wheat production, which the government may have failed to estimate, say market sources.
In the new season, the government has procured 2.62 crore tonnes of wheat from farmers at support prices, which is short of the initial target of 3.41 crore tonnes.
