How Sensex reached 100-point high, read details

Sensex was started in 1986. Its base year was 1978-79 and base number was 100. In July 1990, this figure reached the level of 1000. In 1992, it crossed the 4000 mark. After this, it had to wait till 1999 to cross the 5000 mark. In 1999, Sensex reached a peak of 5150. Even in 2000, the momentum of the stock market remained intact and crossed the 6000 level. But, 2001 and 2002 proved to be very bad. In 2001 the Sensex fell again to 4462 and in 2002 to 3758. In 2003 it was at the level of 5920 and in 2004 at 6617.

The Sensex soared to a peak of 9442 in 2005. It crossed the 14000 level in the following year. The Sensex created history by crossing the 20000 level in 2007 and 21000 in 2008. According to data provided on BSE, Sensex fell to 17530 in 2009. It was 21,108 in 2010 and 20,664 in 2011. Its peak was 19,612 in 2012. The Sensex was at a high of 21,483 in 2013 before the Modi government came to power.

Asia's most valuable stock exchange

In 2014, the Sensex closed higher than the Hang Seng index. Sensex became Asia's most valued stock exchange. In the same year, the Sensex jumped from 21,000 to a peak of 28,822. In early January 2015, the Sensex closed at 29,278. The Sensex has crossed the 30,000 mark this year due to the reduction in the repo rate. 29077 in 2016 and Sensex reached 34137 in 2017.

Celebrating Modi government's victory

In 2018, Sensex crossed the mark of 38,000. On May 23, 2019, the market hit a historic high and crossed the 40,000 mark for the first time and reached a record high of 41,809 this year. It may be mentioned here that on May 23, 2019, the Narendra Modi government came back to power. The market also celebrated the result and touched the 40 thousand mark for the first time. In 2020, Sensex reached the level of 47,896.

Long jump again

The market touched a low of 25,981 on the second day of Janata Curfew in 2020. In the first month of 2021, Sensex saw a big jump. On January 20, Joe Biden took the oath of office in America and the next day, on January 21, the Sensex crossed the 50 thousand mark for the first time. Sensex crossed the mark of 60,000 in 2021 itself. In the same year it also crossed the all-time high of 62245.43 but this record was also broken on 1 December 2022 and the Sensex reached an all-time high of 63583.07.
