Abuse of Monopoly in Android System: Google in India Rs. 1338 crore fine

Global search giant Google is being slapped with huge penalties in one country after another. After Europe, yesterday also in India for abuse of monopoly in Android system Rs. A penalty of 1338 crores has been imposed.

According to a statement issued by the CCI on Thursday, the fine has been imposed on Google for abusing its dominant position in the Android mobile device ecosystem in the smartphone market. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has imposed a fine of Rs 1337.76 crore on Google.

CCI has also directed the company to cease and desist from its improper business activities. In an order issued on Thursday, the commission said that Google has also been directed to change its mode of operation within a stipulated time frame. It also ordered Google to stop incentivizing smartphone companies to adopt its search engine.


2019 Complaint and Now Penalty:

It may be mentioned here that this case is more than 3 years old. In April 2019, the CCI ordered a comprehensive probe into the matter following complaints from users of Android-based smartphones in the country. Google was accused of engaging in unfair trade practices in two agreements, the Application Distribution Agreement (MDA) and the Anti-Fragmentation Agreement (AFA). Android is an open-source, mobile operating system developed by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for smartphones and tablets.

Apart from this, the Competition Commission is also investigating Google's business activities in the smart TV market and in-app payment system. According to a report, there are currently around 60 crore smartphones in the hands of people in India and 97% of them run on the Android operating system.
